Health News Update: When is as Important as What to Eat                           10.26.26

Hello everyone: When we eat shapes our circadian responses and can support or upset our metabolic pathways. This is more critical than it seems as chronic disturbance of our natural circadian controls leads to diseases and many conditions that you do not want.

“Long-term dietary habits are determinants of metabolic health. In particular, western-style diets, which include fat-rich food and snacks that are consumed around the clock, play a causative role in the development of some chronic diseases

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) improves metabolic health. Both early TRF (eTRF, food intake restricted to the early part of the day) and mid-day TRF (mTRF, food intake restricted to the middle of the day) have been shown to have metabolic benefits.

Here we show that eTRF was more effective than mTRF at improving insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, eTRF, but not mTRF, improved fasting glucose, reduced total body mass and adiposity, ameliorated inflammation, and increased gut microbial diversity. No serious adverse events were reported during the trial. In conclusion, eTRF showed greater benefits for insulin resistance and related metabolic parameters compared with mTRF.”

Bottom Line: While there were some limitations to this study, such as it was only 5 weeks, the results are impressive and appear consistent with other studies on the same topic. If you are not already doing eTRF, you might want to make is part of your lifestyle. You could start by just doing this on the weekends, or any other day of the week. See how it goes and gradually increase the number of days of eTRF. While you are doing this, make a chart of how you are feeling overall right now, and then after several months of eTRF and compare the charts. The chart should contain a list (as long or as brief as you want) of how you are feeling in multiple areas such as sleep; digestion; weight; energy; pain; cravings; fog; anxiety; depression; or anything you might like to see improve. Let me know what you find out!
