Health News Update: Plant-based vs. Aging 9.21.26
Hello everyone: As you know, sustained low-grade inflammation not only will cause, perpetuate, and/or aggravate every known human ailment, it is also somewhat difficult to recognize. Most of us do not connect this smoldering condition to what our current health may be doing or the future trajectory of our health (aging). In other words, you may have a chronic health problem that is pretty minor, so you may not take that as a symptom of inflammation…but that is what any chronic health issue is. On top of that, the vast majority of inflammation is controlled by the immune system. A dysregulated immune system leads to a chronic burden of excessive, non-purposeful inflammation that drives virtually all health problems…and that included aging (inflammaging). Is there any proof that dietary choices can raise or lower inflammation and immune function? If there is, what can we do about it?
“Dietary patterns high in refined starches, sugar, and saturated and trans-fatty acids, poor in natural antioxidants and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and poor in omega-3 fatty acids may cause an activation of the innate immune system, most likely by excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines associated with a reduced production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.
In summary, the results of several studies suggest that the MedDiet may have a dual effect on the prevention of CVD (cardiovascular disease), improving classical cardiovascular risk factors and also having an intense anti-inflammatory effect. The present review also provides evidence that a MDP (Mediterranean Diet Plan) alone or one enriched with some of its main components (i.e. extra virgin olive oil and nuts), not only diminishes the classical cardiovascular risk factors but is also associated with important reductions in circulating inflammatory biomarkers, cellular inflammatory biomarkers and improves endothelial dysfunction. Moreover, increased consumption of antioxidant-rich foods as in a MDP in general and of polyphenols in particular was associated with better cognitive performance in an elderly cohort at high cardio- vascular risk”.

Bottom Line: My challenge to you is to try this food plan for 6 months. If you are in need of guidance, I would recommend this site:
Here you can get guidance on what and how much to eat, meal plans, recipes and more to make it super easy to go into the Mediterranean food plan. You can modify it to remove gluten or other foods too, as well as how to break it down into 2 or 3 meals per day. Let me know what your experience is with the site…it has been very helpful to me so far.
