Health News Update: Dementia Risk vs. Diet 8.24.26
Hey everyone: I think by now we all know that certain food plans are healthier than others, however, only recently has the literature focused on the positive benefits of going plant based related to dementia risk. Here’s the news:
“Plant-based diets have been linked to slower cognitive decline, but data on long-term dietary changes and from diverse populations are limited. The primary aim of this study was to examine plant-based dietary patterns and their change over time in relation to Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRDs).
“People who followed a high-quality plant-based diet had a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, while those with a low-quality plant-based diet had a higher risk, prospective data showed. Shifting to eating fewer low-quality plant foods over time was tied to an 11% reduced dementia risk.”

Bottom Line:
This study looked at diet quality including an overall plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI) and found that…
“These findings suggest that adopting plant-based diets, specifically refraining from low-quality plant-based diets, even at an older age, is associated with a lower risk of ADRDs.”
Ask yourself a few questions:
Do I have brain fog?
Am I noticing some memory slips occurring more frequently?
Is there a history of any type of dementia in my family tree?
Am I depressed or anxious?
Do I have trouble sleeping?
Do I get cognitively fatigued easily, such as does reading a book make me sleepy?
Are my math skills slipping?
Is any cognitive skill slipping?
If you answer any of these questions with a yes, then you can reasonably assume you are experiencing some neuro-degeneration related to systemic inflammation. One absolutely major and key driver of inflammation is our food choices. Upgrade yourself (and bring your loved ones and friends along too!) to an unprocessed, whole-foods, clean plant-based food plan and let me know what happens. You can start with the Mediterranean food plan to make it easy, and once you see the benefits to your health, the next upgrade for even better results and benefits is the Green Mediterranean food plan. Please go for it.
